Alexander Ovechkin, Washington Capitals Captain and winger recorded his ninth 40 goal season, currently leading the league on his 28th event strength goal, also leading the league.

He is one of only 6 players in history to record 40 regular season goals nine times joining Mike Bossy and Mike Gartner with 9 seasons and trailing Wayne Gretzky with 12 seasons Marcel Dionne and Mario Lemieux with 10 seasons.

He was the first player to reach 40-goals for the 7th time in his career, making him the sole owner of first place, passing Phil Esposito and Bobby Hull who each achieved it six times in their careers.

There have been 597 40-goal regular seasons in the league and Ovechkin owns 1.5% of them. Among active players there are only 43 40-goal seasons of which Oviechkin owns 20.9%, making it the highest share of goal scoring, era adjusted.

40 goals in 65 regular season games is a 0.615 pace which is slightly better than his 0.606 career average an puts him on pace for potentially another 50-goal season as well as reaching the 600 career regular season goals plateau.

370 total regular season even strength goals is now tied for 21st all time with Gilbert Perreault, only three back from Mats Sundin at 20th.
