mixtape: Tom & Jerry Metal

MPHimage_1I cannot emphasize enough the importance of laughter. For me, it began with my father’s love of the old Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer and Warner Studios cartoon shorts and the early introduction to the works of Bob Allen, Tex Avery, Friz Freleng, Dick Lundy, Chuck Jones, Robert McKimson, Robert Clampett, Frank Tashlin, Art Davis, Ben “Bugs” Hardaway, as well as Fred Quimby, Hugh Harman, Rudolf Ising, Leon Schlesinger and of course, William Hanna and Joseph Barbera. It’s Joe Barbera’s contribution that brings us to this week’s MPH noise on Party 934 broadcast. After 162 episodes, Tom and Jerry aired it’s final episode titled, The Karate Guard in 2005 on the date of this week’s set. It was the last Tom and Jerry cartoon to be written, co-directed and co-produced by the characters’ co-creator Joseph Barbera before his death in 2006.

In memory of all the great Tom & Jerry antics of back in the day: the chases, the traps, botched capture attempts and plot twists this weeks’ show takes all of them into account to weave a sonic tapestry as anxious as the original cartoons used to make you. There’s a few head scratchers included for good measure so it’s not one long extreme metal inspired onslaught which mirrors the undulation of many of those original cartoons. As always, there’s a few new tracks peppered in with some classics and the couple of listener requests that came in related to the theme. No surprises though on the lead off being Primus though.
