mixtape: supplanted singer

MPHimage_1MPH featured some extra time this week covering for our sister show Hard Corps 101 Friday night, thus there was ample time to explore the range of band’s careers and do something unique with the show. Earlier in the week there was an ongoing discussion about the difficulty for bands to replace members and yet remain relevant. Although there are a handful of bands which essentially contain no original members that came up in the discussion we ended up focusing most on those bands who traded out “core” members and yet maintained some significance not only to their fan base but respect within their relative genres.

Singers are typically a centerpiece of a band’s sound it can prove to be fatal if a band loses one, so imagine the challenge for bands who go through several. Every band on this week’s show has had three, or more, lead vocalists during their existence. Due to time we skipped past some of the more obvious examples such as Black Sabbath, Iron Maiden, Anthrax, Deep Purple, Iced Earth and even Van Halen (even if the Cherone era is questionable, at best, within the context of this conversation) or some of the circumstantial ones (that brief moment in time Andres was lead vocals for Sepultura between Cavalera & Green) jumped into some of the more interesting examples including a few new releases which was a nice treat as well as some classic throwbacks and rare releases. Included below the jump are some of my show notes, including the vocalist featured on the release. Feel free to mention any bands I might have missed in the comments too!

In addition to covering quite a bit of ground so far musically on party934’s MPH. But that wasn’t the only ground to cover. The New York New Jersey Trail Counsel is in the midst of 2013 Trail Fest and are looking for volunteers to help with the annual trail cleaning and mapping programs. I can attest to the importance of their work having hiked this week’s featured trails in Norvin Green for well over a decade. They maintain the maps and markers, clear the trails of debris and reroute as the ground becomes worn, catalog flora and fauna with the Park Staff and even more. To learn more about how you can volunteer your time or make a donation go to www.nynjtc.org or watch the mphnoise facebook or twitter for more info.
