mixtape: lengthening the listen

New month, new mix. Today, rather than spinning a web of inter-related songs, at least in my mind, I thought I would allow those who already create inter-related songs speak for themselves. Many of these thematic executions need little-to-no introduction, they are wonderful concept recordings that flow so beautifully top-to-bottom that splitting any of the songs into a mixtape without the others is almost a disservice to the creation itself… Not that the songs don’t stand alone well, many do and are priceless singles, but inside the context of the sonic landscape the wonderland you enter is enjoyable beyond words. These are my fifteen favorites that were produced with the intention (to the best of my understanding) to be concepts and explored aurally as a full album and my personal absolute favorite way to experience them is as such. Each explores not only a depth of songwriting but also in production, artwork and overall execution that defies the normal nature of listening. Every one of them touches me personally for a different reason and I thank each of their creators from the bottom of my heart for producing them, as they’ve left an indelible mark on my perception of music.

the Mothers of Invention Freak Out! Verve 1966
the Beatles Sgt Pepper’s Lonely Heart’s Club Band Apple Recordings 1967
Yes Tales from Topographic Oceans Atlantic
Rush Hemespheres Capitol 1978
Pink Floyd The Wall 1979
Queensryche Operation: Mindcrime Manhattan / EMI 1988
Iron Maiden Seventh Son of a Seventh Son Capitol 1988
Dream Theatre Metropolis, part 2: Scenes from a Memory Atlantic/ East West 1999
Anathema Judgement Music for Nations 1999
Neurosis Times of Grace Relapse – with Tribes of Neurot Grace Neurot Recordings 1999
Tool Lateralus Volcano 2001
Tori Amos Scarlet’s Walk Epic 2002
Green Day American Idiot 2004
Porcupine Tree Deadwing Atlantic / Lava 2005
Between the Buried and Me Colors Victory 2007

I’m sure there are probably more that I could have wedged in here had I spent more time putting thought into it and working through my massive collection of music. For now however this was where I started… though as few other great top to bottom listens that came to mind were King Crimson In the Court of King Crimson, Opeth Deliverance, Boysetsfire After the Eulogy, Savatage Streets … and, of course, there’s the infamous rock operaby The Who, Tommy, but you can debate me later on why I didn’t include this among the top 15 above.
